Section on the lessons to be drawn from his—may Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace—momentous sermon on the Day of ʿArafah
Section
Muslim records in his Ṣaḥīḥ, through the transmission of Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn, from his father, from Jābir, in the account of the Farewell Pilgrimage, that Jābir said:
“When the sun had passed its zenith on the Day of ʿArafah, the Prophet ordered that al-Qaṣwāʾ be made ready for him. When it had been saddled, he rode until he reached the base of the valley. There he addressed the people, saying: ‘Your blood and your property are inviolable to one another, as inviolable as the sanctity of this day of yours…’”
(1) In the printed edition the publisher inserted the heading, “On the benefits of his—peace and blessings be upon him and his family—great sermon on the Day of Arafah.” It would have been more appropriate to place this addition in a bottom or side margin, since it is absent from the manuscript copies. The word fasl (“section”) is likewise missing from the print.
(2) This refers to Jaʿfar ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, widely known as Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq, a celebrated, trustworthy jurist from whom al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and the other compilers of the Sunan narrate. He died in 148 AH. See: Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb, 1:132, no. 92 (J).
(3) This is Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, Abū Jaʿfar al-Bāqir, a distinguished and reliable imam cited by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and the rest of the major ḥadīth scholars. He died in 110 AH. See: Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb, 2:192, no. 542 (M).
(4) Al-Qaṣwāʾ was the name of the Prophet’s camel.
(5) The word lahu (“for him”) is omitted in copy (T). The expression ruḥilat lahu means that a saddle was fastened to her back so that he could ride her. See: Mukhtār al-Ṣiḥāḥ, root r-h-l, p. 237.
(6) The valley of ʿUranah.
(7) That is, the Day of ʿArafah.
