They spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about a church they had seen (1) in the land of Abyssinia called Mariya. They recounted (2) its beauty (3) and the images displayed inside it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Those are a people who, whenever a devout servant or a righteous man dies among them, they build a mosque over his grave and set up those images within it (4); such people are the worst of Allah’s creation.” (5)
Ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, reported: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the women who visit graves and those who build mosques and place lamps upon them.” This was narrated by the four compilers of the Sunan (6). Al-Tirmidhī said, “A ḥasan ḥadīth” (7), and in some copies: “ṣaḥīḥ.” (8)
(1) The printed edition reads “raʾataha,” whereas both Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, as well as the manuscript copies, follow the wording I have adopted.
(2) MS B reads: “her beauty.”
(3) MS C reads: “her kind,” which is probably a copyist’s error.
(4) MS B reads: “the image.”

Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Book of Mosques, chapter “Prohibition of building mosques over graves,” ḥadīth 528 (1/375).
(6) Abū Dāwūd, Book of Funerals, chapter “Women visiting graves,” ḥadīth 3236 (3/558); al-Tirmidhī, Chapters of Prayer, chapter “Disapproval of taking a grave as a mosque,” ḥadīth 320 (2/136); Ibn Mājah, Book of Funerals, chapter “Prohibition of women visiting graves,” ḥadīths 1574–1576; al-Nasāʾī, Funerals, chapter “Severity regarding lighting lamps at graves,” 4/94–95.

(8) See Aḥmad Muḥammad Shākir’s notes on this ḥadīth in al-Tirmidhī, 2/137, where he states that the report has corroborating chains that raise it to the level of ṣaḥīḥ li-ghayrihi (sound on account of supporting evidence).
