The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade practices of this kind and said, “The Children of Israel were ruined only when their women adopted them.”
In the report of Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, recorded in the Ṣaḥīḥ, Muʿāwiyah once declared, “You have introduced an evil style of dress, whereas the Prophet of God, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade al-zūr (false adornment).” He then related: A man came carrying a staff with a rag tied to its head, and Muʿāwiyah remarked, “Look, this too is zūr.” Qatādah said, “He means the strips of cloth with which women pad out their hair.”
Another narration from Ibn al-Musayyib, also in the Ṣaḥīḥ, states that Muʿāwiyah arrived in Madinah, delivered a sermon, and produced a bundle of hair, saying, “I never imagined anyone would do this except the Jews. When the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, learned of it, he called it zūr.”
Thus the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, spoke of attaching hair extensions, declaring, “The Children of Israel were destroyed when their women began to do this,” warning his community against falling into the same practice. For that reason Muʿāwiyah said, “I never thought anyone would do it except the Jews.”
