Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

He said, “If we are granted another year—God willing—we shall fast on the ninth.” Ibn ʿAbbās then related, “The following year had not yet arrived before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away.” Muslim records this report in his Ṣaḥīḥ.

Imām Aḥmad also narrates from Ibn ʿAbbās that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Fast on the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ and differ from the Jews by fasting a day before it or a day after it.”

Saʿīd transmits it with the same chain, wording it: “Fast the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ and differ from the Jews; fast a day before it, or a day after it.”

The ḥadīth was also transmitted by Ibn Abī Laylā from Dāwūd ibn ʿAlī through his father, from

(1) See Sahih Muslim, Book of Fasting, chapter “Which day is the fast of Ashura observed?”, hadith no. 1133 (2:797–98). (2) MS B adds: “and it was also narrated by Ahmad.” (3) MS B includes the phrase radiya Allahu anhuma (“may Allah be pleased with them both”). (4) The word fihi (“in it”) is absent from MSS A and B as well as from the printed edition. (5) MSS A and B, and the printed edition, read: “and a day after it,” which is incorrect; the printed edition further has: “a day before it or a day after it.” The Musnad contains the correct wording adopted here. See Musnad Ahmad 1:241 (Musnad of Ibn Abbas). (6) The narrator intended is Sa id ibn Mansur. (7) So in MS T. MSS J, D, B and the printed edition read: “and the hadith that he narrated …,” etc. The reading adopted here is correct, for this is the chain by which Ahmad transmitted the hadith just cited. (8) Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla al-Ansari al-Kufi (Abu Muhammad) was the qadi of Kufa and a jurist. Ahmad ibn Hanbal judged him weak, saying: “We preferred Ibn Abi Layla’s fiqh to his hadith.” Ibn Khuzayma said: “He was not a precise memoriser, though he was a learned jurist.” Hadith specialists generally held that he was upright and distinguished, but that his judicial duties impaired his memory. See Tahdhib al-tahdhib 9:301–3, no. 501. (9) Dawud ibn Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn Abbas al-Hashimi governed Mecca, Medina and other regions, and supervised the pilgrimage. His hadith is considered acceptable. He died while governor of Medina in 133 AH at the age of 52. See Taqrib al-tahdhib 1:233, no. 29.
