And inwardly as well: “The Messenger of Allah cursed the women who imitate men and the men who imitate women, and he said, ‘Expel them from your houses.’” He also banished the effeminate man, for he was a male who outwardly imitated a gender other than his own.
Abu Ghaṭafān al-Murrī reported: I heard ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbās, may Allah be pleased with them both, say: “When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted on the Day of ʿĀshūrāʾ and commanded that it be observed, they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, it is a day venerated by the Jews and the Christians.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, ‘If…’”
(1) The printed edition inserts the benediction “salla Allahu ʿalayhi wa-ʿala alihi wa-sallam.”
(2) Al-Bukhari relates—on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbas—that the Prophet, salla Allahu ʿalayhi wa-ʿala alihi wa-sallam, “cursed the effeminate men (al-mukhannathun) and the women who imitate men, and said: ‘Drive them out of your houses.’ Accordingly, the Prophet expelled so-and-so, and ʿUmar expelled so-and-so.” Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Dress, chapter “Expelling those who imitate women from houses,” no. 5886; Fath al-Bari, 10:333. Numerous reports forbidding men to imitate women and women to imitate men are widely transmitted in all the canonical collections, and scholars have devoted separate chapters to them in works of hadith, fiqh, and related disciplines.
(3) Same source as the previous note.
(4) MSS A, B, and T read: “with anyone not of his own sex.” A mukhannath is a man who imitates women in his movements, speech, dress, and the like; see Fath al-Bari, 9:334.
(5) Abu Ghatfan b. Tarif—some say b. Malik—al-Murri; it is said that his personal name was Saʿd. He served as scribe to ʿUthman and later to Marwan. A reliable but sparing Medinan transmitter: Ibn Saʿd places him in the second generation, while Ibn Hajar counts him among the senior narrators of the third. See Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat al-kubra 5:176; Ibn Hajar, Taqrib al-tahdhib 2:461, no. 18 (“al-Kunā”).
(6) The word qala (“he said”) is missing from the printed edition.
(7) The phrase radiya Allahu ʿanhuma (“may Allah be pleased with them both”) is omitted in MSS A, D, and T.
