Second: A Study of Selected Topics from the Book
Topic One
The Author’s Alert to Two Pivotal Principles
The author opens his work, The Necessity of the Straight Path in Differentiating Oneself from the People of Hellfire, with an introduction of great significance—one that merits close reflection and careful study. It forms the foundation for grasping the problem of Muslims imitating other nations, for addressing that problem, and for steering clear of its dangers with clear insight and guidance.
He thereby draws attention to two foundational principles of the religion that every Muslim must understand, each of which is closely linked to the other.
The first principle:
The Messenger of Allah—may peace and blessings be upon him and his family—gave a decisive and unequivocal report that his community would follow the ways of the nations before them—the Jews and Christians, the Persians and Romans, and others—inch by inch and cubit by cubit. This means that segments of this ummah will, without doubt, imitate the unbelievers.
The second principle:
He—peace and blessings be upon him and his family—also affirmed, with the same certainty, that Allah, exalted is He, has guaranteed the preservation of the religion; that a group of Muslims will always remain manifest upon the truth until the Hour is established; and that the ummah will never unanimously agree upon misguidance.
