Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Ḥadrad reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Adopt the hardy ways of Maʿad, accustom yourselves to roughness, wear sandals, and (at times) walk barefoot.”

This report is widely known and reliably preserved from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—for he wrote it to the Muslims; it will be mentioned, God willing, in the discussion of the Rightly Guided Caliphs.

Al-Tirmidhī said: Qutaybah related to us

(1) MS A reads “Bilal ibn Hudud.” I have found no biographical entry for this Bilal ibn Abi Hadrad except what al-Ajluni relates in Kashf al-Khafa: Abu Nuaym transmits the hadith from al-Qaqaʿ ibn Abi Hadrad; al-Baghawi transmits it from Ibn Abi Hadrad without naming him; and al-Tabarani transmits it from Abdullah ibn Abi Hadrad. Ibn Hajar likewise notes the report in al-Isaba, stating that al-Baghawi, Ibn Shahin, and al-Tabarani all narrate it from al-Qaqaʿ ibn Abi Hadrad. Allah knows best. See Kashf al-Khafa 1:378; al-Isaba 3:239. (2) Al-Ajluni writes in Kashf al-Khafa: “Al-Tabarani records it in his Muʿjam al-Kabir; Ibn Shahin in al-Sahabah; Abu Shaykh and Abu Nuaym in al-Maʿrifah,” after which he cites the hadith. He then adds: “Al-Baghawi also includes it in Muʿjam al-Sahabah,” noting again that al-Tabarani in al-Kabir and others transmit it. See Kashf al-Khafa wa-Muzil al-Ilbas 1:378, hadith no. 1018. Ibn Hajar mentions the same report in the biography of al-Qaqaʿ ibn Abi Hadrad in al-Isaba, indicating that al-Baghawi, Ibn Shahin, and al-Tabarani all transmit it from al-Qaqaʿ ibn Abi Hadrad, who heard the Prophet say it; see al-Isaba 3:239. (3) The word haddathana (“he narrated to us”) is omitted in MS H. (4) The narrator is Qutaybah ibn Saʿid ibn Jamil ibn Tarif al-Thaqafi, Abu Raja, a trustworthy and authoritative hadith master. He died in 240 AH at the age of ninety. See Taqrib al-Tahdhib 2:123, no. 85.
