Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

(1) Ḥarb al-Kirmānī (2) reported: “I said to Aḥmad, ‘What about these coarse sandals?’ He replied, ‘Those are the Sindhi ones.’ He added, ‘If they are used for performing wuḍūʾ (3), for the privy, or out of necessity, then there is no harm (4).’ It seems that he disliked people walking in them (5) through the alleyways. Someone asked, ‘And what of a sandal made of wood?’ He answered, ‘There is no harm in that either (6) when there is a need.’

Ḥarb said: Aḥmad ibn Naṣr (7) narrated to us; Ḥabbān ibn Mūsā (8) narrated to us, who said:—

(1) Copies J, D, and T read: “And he also said.” (2) The printed edition likewise inserts the particle “also” after “al-Kirmani.” Harb b. Ismail b. Khalaf al-Hanzali al-Kirmani was a distinguished follower of Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal. He heard a number of Ahmad’s legal queries and these were later transmitted by Ahmad’s students, such as al-Khallal. He was the leading jurist of his region, and the ruling authority entrusted judicial matters to him. See: Tabaqat al-Hanabila 1:145. (3) The printed text reads: “this Sindhi if it was …” and so forth. (4) This statement conveys the same sense as the preceding one. See Masail al-Imam Ahmad by al-Naysaburi 2:145–46. (5) The printed edition reads: “with it.” (6) The word “also” is absent from copy A. (7) Ahmad b. Nasr b. Malik al-Khuza‘i, Abu Abd Allah, was a trustworthy and eminent scholar. During the reign of the caliph al-Wathiq he was interrogated about the Mu‘tazili doctrine of the createdness of the Quran; he refused to endorse the innovation and insisted on affirming the believers’ vision of their Lord on the Day of Resurrection, as established by Allah and His Messenger. Al-Wathiq had him executed and his head was displayed in Baghdad in 231/846. His martyrdom—and that of many other leading Salaf—was one outcome of Mu‘tazili heresies masquerading as “freedom.” See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:27, no. 134 A; Tabaqat al-Hanabila 1:81–82, no. 75. (8) Hiban b. Musa b. Sawar al-Sulami al-Marwazi, Abu Muhammad, was a reliable transmitter from whom al-Bukhari, Muslim, and others narrated. He died in 233/847. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 2:174–75, no. 315.
