Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

“…change your grey hair, and do not imitate the Jews.” (1)

This is proof that resemblance to them can occur without any deliberate intention or action on our part; it is enough merely to leave unaltered what was created within us. Such passive conformity is even more emphatic than incidental outward agreement.

It has also been narrated in this ḥadīth—from Ibn ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with them both—that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade imitating the non-Arabs and said:

“Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” (2)

The judge Abū Yaʿlā (3) cited this report. On its basis, more than one scholar has argued that a number of foreign styles of dress are disliked

(1) See Takhreej al-Hadith, p. 200. (2) Related by Abu Dawud in the Book of Dress, “Chapter on ostentatious attire,” on the authority of Ibn Umar: the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever imitates a people is one of them” (4:314, no. 4031). Ahmad also transmits it in his Musnad from Ibn Umar in the wording: “I was sent immediately before the Hour …,” up to the words, “and whoever imitates a people is one of them” (Musnad Ahmad 2:50). The author has already remarked that the chain in Abu Dawud is sound; he likewise states in al-Fatawa (25:331), “This is a good hadith.” Ibn Hajar cites it in Fath al-Bari (6:98) and provides a mursal corroboration with a fair chain. Al-Suyuti includes it in al-Jamiʿ al-saghir, grading it hasan (1:590, no. 8593), while al-Albani declares it sahih in Sahih al-Jamiʿ al-saghir (no. 6025). (3) Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Muhammad b.
