objectionable (1).
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ibrāhīm Duhim (2) said, “He is reliable,” and Abū Ḥātim (3) remarked, “His ḥadīth is sound” (4).
As for Abū Munīb (5) al-Jurashī (6), he stated: “Concerning him, Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿUjlī affirms that he is trustworthy, and I know of no one who has spoken ill of him. Ḥassān ibn ʿAṭiyyah heard from him, and Imām Aḥmad (7) and others have cited this ḥadīth as evidence.”
At the very least, this ḥadīth establishes the prohibition of imitating them, even though its outward sense indicates the disbelief of the one who does so—just as in His words:
“And whoever among you allies himself with them is indeed one of them” (al-Māʾidah 5:51). (10)
(1) In manuscripts J and D the wording is: “there is no harm in him.”
(2) He is Abu Saʿid ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Ibrahim ibn ʿAmr al-ʿUthmani, their client, nicknamed Duhaim; a trustworthy, meticulous hadith memoriser. He died in 245 AH at the age of seventy-five. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:471, no. 856 (“ʿAbd al-Rahman”).
(3) He is Abu Hatim Muhammad ibn Idris ibn al-Mundhir al-Hanzali al-Razi, the well-known imam and hadith master, praised for his piety, precision, and expertise in narrator criticism. Born in 195 AH, he died in 277 AH. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 9:31–34, no. 40 (“Muhammad”).
(4) The T manuscript reads “defective in hadith,” which is a scribal mistake: Abu Hatim once declared him trustworthy and elsewhere said, “A Shami; there is no harm in him.” See: al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil 5:219, no. 1031. The copyist evidently changed mustaqim (“upright”) into saqim (“defective”).
(5) Manuscripts J and D omit the word “Abu,” apparently by oversight.
(6) Manuscript B has: “Abu Habib.”
(7) In manuscripts J and D the name “Ahmad” is omitted.
(8) Manuscript B adds: “he said, and the least that can be said about this hadith….”
(9) The printed edition reads: “that it.”
