(1) He is Abu al-Munib al-Jurashi al-Ahdab of Damascus, a fourth-generation transmitter, reliable; the author has already dealt with him in sufficient detail. (2) Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Dress, chapter “On Wearing Garments of Fame,” hadith no. 4031 (4:314); a full discussion of the report will follow below at 1:272. (3) He is the great hadith master Yahya ibn Maʿin ibn ʿAwn al-Ghatafani, their freedman, Abu Zakariyya al-Baghdadi—one of the well-known, reliable memorisers, the leading authority on al-jarh wa-l-taʿdil (narrator evaluation), a contemporary of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and among the universally acknowledged critical scholars. (4) He is ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿAbd al-Karim ibn Yazid ibn Farukh al-Razi, Abu Zurʿa—one of the foremost reliable imams, likewise a chief specialist in al-jarh wa-l-taʿdil and a master critic. (5) The printed edition reads al-Ajli, and the same appears in all the manuscripts when his name is mentioned shortly afterward. He is one of the eminent hadith critics of his time: Ahmad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Salih Abu al-Hasan al-Ajli al-Kufi, resident of Tripoli in the Maghrib, author of Tarikh and al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil, and counted among the master memorisers of hadith.
