places of punishment (1).
As for sites of disbelief and sin where no punishment has descended, if they are converted into places of faith and obedience, this is praiseworthy. Thus, “the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—commanded the people of al-Ṭāʾif to turn the site of their idols into a mosque” (2), and “he instructed the people of al-Yamāmah to establish a mosque on the spot where they had kept their pledge-house” (3).
(1) In manuscript A the reading is amkina (places).
(2) Abu Dawud relates—on the authority of Uthman b. Abi al-As—that the Prophet ordered him to build the mosque of Ta’if “on the very spot where their taghut (idols) had stood”; Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Prayer, chapter “On building mosques,” hadith no. 450 (1:311). Ibn Majah transmits the same report in the Book of Mosques and Congregational Prayer, chapter “Where a mosque may be built,” with the wording “on the place where their taghut had stood,” hadith no. 743 (1:245).
(3) Al-Nasai records—from Talq b. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him)—that he said: “We went as a delegation to the Prophet, pledged allegiance to him, and prayed with him. We told him that in our land we had a church; we then asked him for some of the water left over from his ablution. He called for water, performed ablution and rinsed his mouth, poured the remaining water into a waterskin, and instructed us: ‘Go back; when you reach your land, demolish your church, sprinkle its site with this water, and turn it into a mosque….’ We did so, and we gave the adhan there.” See Sunan al-Nasai, Book of Mosques, chapter “Taking churches as mosques” (2:38–39). The author of Fath al-Rabbani judged its chain sound.
