Abu Ṣāliḥ al-Ghifārī (1) reported that ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—passed through Babylon while travelling. The mu’adhin came to inform him that the time for the ʿAṣr prayer had entered. When he had gone beyond the city limits, he ordered the mu’adhin to pronounce the iqāmah; after completing the prayer he said:
“Indeed, my beloved—the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—forbade me to pray in graveyards and forbade me to pray in the land of Babylon, for it is accursed.” (4)
It is likewise narrated by Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ: Ibn Wahb also told us, saying, “Yahyā ibn Azhar and Ibn Lahīʿah informed me, from Ḥajjāj ibn Shaddād (5), from Abu Ṣāliḥ …”
(1) Saʿid b. ʿAbd al-Rahman al-Ghifari, Abu Salih, an Egyptian transmitter. Ibn Hajar remarks in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib that Ibn Hibban lists him among the thiqat (reliable narrators). Al-ʿAjli writes: “An Egyptian tabiʿi (Successor), trustworthy; his reports from ʿAli are mursal (with the Companion omitted).” See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 4:58-59, no. 100 (letter S).
(2) The printed edition, as well as Sunan Abi Dawud, reads ḥabibi; the alternative spelling found here has the same meaning.
(3) The word “the Prophet” is absent in MS (Ṭ).
(4) See Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-Salat, “Chapter on the places where prayer is forbidden,” hadith no. 490 (1/329). Al-Khattabi comments in Maʿalim al-Sunan on the margin of this hadith: “There is discussion about the chain of transmission, and I know of no scholar who has forbidden prayer on the soil of Babylon. It is contradicted by a more authentic report, the Prophet’s statement: ‘The earth has been made for me a mosque and a means of purification …’” He then offers an explanation should the hadith prove sound. See the margin of Sunan Abi Dawud 1:329. The author will soon cite a stronger isnad that reinforces the report; al-Bayhaqi also transmits it in his Sunan 2:451, chapter “Those who disliked praying in places of subsidence and divine punishment.”
(5) Al-Hajjaj b. Shaddad al-Sanʿani, counted among the Egyptian narrators. Ibn Hajar notes in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib: “Abu Dawud transmits only one hadith from him—concerning prayer at Babylon. I add: Ibn Hibban lists him among the thiqat.” Ibn al-Qattan, however, says: “His status is unknown.” See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 2:202, no. 373 (letter Ḥ).
