that is, we were in a state of Jahiliyya, or upon a Jahili way, or following a Jahili custom, and the like.

(1) Part of a hadith reported by both al-Bukhari and Muslim. Al-Bukhari’s wording runs: on the authority of Abdullah b. ʿUmar, from ʿUmar b. al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “Messenger of Allah, in the pre-Islamic period (jahiliyyah) I vowed to spend a night in retreat (iʿtikaf) in the Sacred Mosque.” The Prophet replied, “Fulfil your vow,” and ʿUmar therefore observed one night of retreat. See: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Iʿtikaf, chapter “Whoever held that fasting is not required of one observing iʿtikaf,” hadith no. 2042 (Fath al-Bari 4/284); the same page also records no. 2043 under the chapter “If someone vowed, during the jahiliyyah, to perform iʿtikaf and then embraced Islam,” with a different wording. Muslim, Book of Faith, chapter “The vow of a non-Muslim and what is to be done with it once he accepts Islam,” hadith no. 1656 (3/1277). (2) Part of a longer hadith found in al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud. Al-Bukhari begins: on the authority of ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, that ʿAʾishah, the wife of the Prophet, informed him: “Marriage in the jahiliyyah took four forms…” The report concludes: “When Muhammad was sent with the truth, he abolished every form of jahiliyyah marriage except the one practiced today.” See: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Marriage, chapter “No marriage is valid without a guardian,” hadith no. 5127 (Fath al-Bari 9/182–83); Abu Dawud, Sunan, Book of Divorce, chapter “The kinds of marriages contracted in the jahiliyyah,” hadith no. 2272 (2/702). (3) Copy T reads: “jahiliyyah.” (4) Part of a hadith also recorded by al-Bukhari, Book of Tribulations, chapter “What to do when no community exists,” hadith no. 7084 (Fath al-Bari 13/25), on the authority of Hudhayfah b. al-Yaman: “People used to ask the Messenger of Allah about good…,” and so forth. Muslim relates it as well in the Book of Government, chapter “The obligation to remain with the Muslim community…,” hadith no. 1847 (3/1475–76).
