Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Al-Ḥuṣayn reported—through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿUqbah—from Abū ʿUqbah, a freedman of Persian origin, who said:

“I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at the Battle of Uḥud. I struck one of the polytheists and cried out, ‘Take this from me—I am the Persian youth!’ The Prophet turned toward me and said, ‘Why did you not say: Take this from me—I am the Ansārī youth?’”

(1) Dawud ibn al-Husayn, the client (mawla) of ʿAmr ibn ʿUthman ibn ʿAffan, Abu Sulayman, a Medinan. Ibn ʿUyaynah said, “We used to avoid his reports.” Ibn Maʿin judged him reliable (thiqah), while Abu Zurʿah called him “lenient” (layyin). Ibn ʿAdi held that his narrations are acceptable, whereas Ibn al-Madini said, “Whatever he transmits from ʿIkrimah is rejected (munkar).” Al-Nasaʾi remarked, “There is no harm in him.” Ibn Hibban listed him among the trustworthy, and Ibn Saʿd and al-ʿAjli likewise declared him reliable. In short, he is sound except in his transmissions from ʿIkrimah. He was also suspected of Kharijite leanings, though he did not propagate that doctrine. He died in 135 AH. See al-Jarh wa l-Taʿdil 3:408, no. 1874; Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:231, no. 5 D. (2) ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi ʿUqbah, a Persian Medinan and client of the Ansar. Ibn Hibban includes him among the trustworthy; he frequently narrates mursal reports. Ibn Hajar, in Taqrib al-Tahdhib, rates him “acceptable” (maqbul) and places him in the third generation. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 6:232, no. 472; Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:492, no. 1051. (3) Abu ʿUqbah, Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman—the transmitter cited here—was a Persian client of the Ansar; some say his personal name was Rashid. He is counted among the Companions. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 12:171, no. 805 (under the kunya entries). (4) The printed edition (and the wording in Abu Dawud) reads: “Take it from me while I am …,” and so forth. (5) The printed edition (as well as Abu Dawud) adds the phrase: “the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family.” (6) Related by Abu Dawud, Sunan, Book of Etiquette, chapter “Tribal Partisanship,” no. 5123 (5:343); and by Ibn Majah, Sunan, Book of Jihad, chapter “Intention in Fighting,” no. 2874 (2:931). The chain contains ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi ʿUqbah, who is known for mursal transmission; Ibn Hibban nonetheless declared him reliable, noting this characteristic, as indicated in his biographical entry.
