He then said:
“The best of you is the one who defends his clan, so long as he incurs no sin.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd.
Abū Dāwūd also transmitted—on the authority of Jubayr ibn Muṭʿim—that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever calls to partisan zealotry is not of us; whoever fights for partisan zealotry is not of us; and whoever dies upon partisan zealotry is not of us.”
He likewise related—from Ibn Masʿūd—that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever supports his people …”
(1) See Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Etiquette, chapter “Tribal Partisanship,” hadith no. 5120 (5:341). The isnad contains Ayyub ibn Suwayd; Abu Dawud comments, “Ayyub ibn Suwayd is weak.” Ayyub ibn Suwayd al-Ramli al-Saybani, known as Abu Masud, was judged unreliable by Ahmad, Ibn Main, al-Bukhari, Abu Hatim, al-Nasaʾi and the other hadith critics. He died in 202 AH. Cf. Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 1:405–406, no. 745.
(2) The printed edition reads: “Abu Dawud.”
(3) In MS J the word appears as muʿazzam; this is an error.
(4) The Companion Jubayr ibn Mutim ibn ʿAdi ibn Nawfal al-Qurashi was one of Quraysh’s sagacious nobles and a noted genealogist whose expertise was sought for both Quraysh and the wider Arabs. His father al-Mutim had granted the Prophet safe-conduct on his return from Taif and had helped annul the iniquitous boycott of the Muslims, Banu Hashim and Banu al-Muttalib. Jubayr accepted Islam before the Conquest of Mecca. On the eve of the Conquest the Prophet said, “In Mecca there are four men of Quraysh whose nobility shields them from polytheism and whom I long to see embrace Islam,” and he named Jubayr among them. He died in 57 AH. See Ibn al-Athir, Usd al-Ghabah 1:271–72.

(6) The printed edition reads: “Abu Dawud.”
(7) The printed edition adds the honorific radiya Allahu ʿanhu (“may Allah be pleased with him”).
