“In you there remains a trait of the Age of Ignorance.” (1) By this the Prophet rebuked that conduct and, by extension, every pre-Islamic trait that Islam did not endorse.
The same meaning appears in the Almighty’s words:
“When those who disbelieved set in their hearts the arrogance—the arrogance of the Age of Ignorance—Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers.” (al-Fath 26) (2)
Linking such bigoted zeal to the Age of Ignorance (3) marks it as blameworthy; therefore, whatever in their morals and actions resembles it is likewise condemned. (4)
In this vein al-Bukhari relates in his Ṣaḥīḥ, on the authority of ʿUbayd Allāh (5) ibn Abī Yazīd (6)
(1) The hadith is cited in both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim: Bukhari, Book of Faith, chapter “Sins dating back to Jahiliyya,” Fath al-Bari, hadith nos. 30 (1/84) and 6050; Muslim, Book of Faith, chapter “Feeding one’s slave from what one eats,” hadith no. 1661 (3/1282–1283) through three chains; also Musnad Ahmad 5/161.
(2) Surah al-Fath, verse 26.
(3) The printed text reads yaqtadi; the meaning is effectively the same.
(4) The word min is missing in the printed edition.
(5) The printed edition gives Abd Allah, but the correct reading is Ubayd Allah; see the isnad in Fath al-Bari 7/156.
(6) Ubayd Allah b. Abi Yazid al-Makki, a client of the family of Qariz b. Shayba, was declared reliable by al-Nasaʾi, al-Ajli, Ibn Maʿin, Abu Zur‘a and others. Ibn Saʿd described him as “trustworthy and prolific in hadith,” placing him in the third Makkan generation. He died in 126 AH at the age of eighty-six. See: Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat al-kubra 5/481-482; Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-tahdhib 7/56-57, no. 109.

ومنه قوله تعالى:
