Among those texts is what Aḥmad relates from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb (1): he said that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—declared, “Whoever rallies under the slogan of the Age of Ignorance (2), tell him to bite his father’s phallus (3)(4) and do not soften the wording.” (5)
It is likewise narrated from Abū Mālik al-Ashʿarī (6)—may Allah be pleased with him—that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Four traits of the Age of Ignorance will persist in my community and they will not abandon them: boasting of ancestral glory, defaming other people’s lineage, seeking rain by the stars, and wailing over the dead.” He added, “The woman who wails—if she does not repent before
(1) He is the eminent Companion Ubayy b. Kab b. Qays b. Ubayd b. Zayd b. Muawiya, an Ansari of the Najjar clan. He took part in the Second Pledge of Aqaba, fought at Badr, Uhud and the rest of the campaigns with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Recognised as master of the Quran-reciters and one of the Companions consulted for legal rulings, the Prophet told him: “Rejoice in your knowledge, Abu al-Munthir,” and also, “Allah has commanded me to recite to you.” ʿUmar used to call him “the leader of the Muslims.” He died during the caliphate of ʿUthman in 23 AH. See: al-Isaba 1/19-20, no. 32.
(2) Al-Baghawi states in Sharh al-Sunna: “His words ‘whoever appeals to the rallying-cry of the Jahiliyya’ mean whoever claims or proclaims a lineage, such as saying, ‘O clan of so-and-so!’ One says ʿazawtu or ʿazzaytu a man when ascribing him to a lineage; the same construction applies to anything that is attached to something else.” Sharh al-Sunna 13/121, hadith no. 3541.
(3) The phrase fa aʿdhuuhu bi-hann abihi means: “Tell him to bite his father’s hann,” i.e. his male organ—stated explicitly rather than euphemistically—to show the repugnance of invoking the rallying-cry of the Jahiliyya. See Sharh al-Sunna 13/121.
(4) The Aṭ manuscript reads: fa aʿdhuuhu hann.
(5) Musnad Ahmad 5/136; also transmitted by ʿAbd Allah b. Ahmad with a different chain from Ubayy b. Kab, Musnad 5/133. The chain is sound.
(6) There is considerable disagreement about this Abu Malik, but the stronger view is that he is al-Harith b. al-Harith al-Ashari, a Companion. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 12/218-19, no. 1002; al-Isaba 1/275, no. 1384.
(7) Manuscript B reads: la yatrukuhunna (“they should not leave them”).
