It is also reported from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “The niche-style grave (laḥd) is for us, while the trench-style grave (shaqq) is for others.” The four compilers of the Sunan narrated it.
Likewise, Jarīr ibn ʿAbdullāh (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “The niche-style grave is for us, and the trench-style grave is for others.” Aḥmad and Ibn Mājah transmitted it, and in another wording recorded by Aḥmad: “and the trench-style grave is for the people of …”

(4) The eminent Companion Jarir b. ʿAbd Allah b. Jabir—known as al-Bajali after his tribe Bajilah—was surnamed Abu ʿAbd Allah. He embraced Islam forty days before the Prophet’s death, was notably handsome, and a chief of his people. When he entered upon the Messenger of Allah, the Prophet honored him, saying: “When a nobleman of a people comes to you, honor him.” Jarir played a pivotal role in rallying Muslims to fight at al-Qadisiyya and elsewhere, and ʿUmar appointed him governor over his tribe. He died in 54 AH.

(٤) هو الصحابي الجليل: جرير بن عبد الله بن جابر - الشليل - بن مالك البجلي، نسبة إلى قبيلة بجيلة، وكنيته: أبو عبد الله، أسلم قبل وفاة النبي صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم بأربعين يوما، وكان حسن الصورة، وهو سيد في قومه، ولما دخل على الرسول صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم أكرمه وقال: "إذا أتاكم كريم قوم فأكرموه". وكان له في حض المسلمين على القتال في القادسية وغيرها أثر كبير، وأمره عمر على بجيلة - قبيلته -. ومات رضي الله عنه سنة (٥٤ هـ) .
