Al-Bukhārī narrates from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Qāsim that al-Qāsim used to walk in front of the funeral procession and would not stand for it. He also transmits from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said, “The people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance used to stand for it, and whenever they saw it they would say, ‘You were among your family as you were,’” repeating the statement twice. Those who object to standing have therefore argued that it was a practice of the Age of Ignorance. This, however, is not the place to discuss the matter itself in detail.
(1) ʿAbd al-Rahman b. al-Qasim b. Muhammad b. Abi Bakr al-Siddiq: a distinguished Medinan Successor (tabiʿi) of the sixth generation, counted among the foremost scholars and righteous men of his time. All hadith critics consider him reliable. Ibn Hajar relates that Ibn Hibban said in al-Thiqat, “He was one of the leading figures of Medina in jurisprudence, knowledge, piety, virtue, memorization, and precision.” He died in Syria in 126 AH. See: Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-tahdhib 6:254, no. 501.

See: Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat al-kubra 5:178-194; Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-tahdhib 8:333-335, no. 601.
