With regard to the ḥadīths recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs—Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim—or in either one of them, I normally suffice with indicating their location therein, for the chief purpose is to reassure the reader about the grade of the report, and that is attained simply by attributing it to the Ṣaḥīḥayn or to one of them.
Likewise, when the author himself states the status of a ḥadīth, I often let that stand after mentioning where it may be found in the ḥadīth collections.
As for those reports that are not contained in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and whose reliability the author does not specify, I have tried, as far as I am able, to clarify their rank: either by citing the verdict of reputable scholars and directing the reader to the relevant references, or—if I found no discussion of the ḥadīth by the leading imams—by examining its chain of transmission myself and then recording the conclusion to which I came. Such cases are, however, very few.
Concerning the other reports and texts the author transmits, I have exerted what effort I could to locate and document them in the available sources. When he quotes from works I have not been able to obtain—such as al-Khallāl’s al-Jāmiʿ, most of the Sunan of Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr, al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Maqdisī’s al-Mustakhraj, and the like—I have attempted to retrieve the same passages from comparable references, such as al-Bayhaqī’s al-Sunan al-Kubrā, al-Ḥākim’s al-Mustadrak, ʿAbd al-Razzāq’s Muṣannaf, and similar compilations, and I have cited them from those works instead. The objective is to confirm the wording from reliable sources, and, God willing, that aim has been achieved.
As for the juristic opinions, legal rulings, and the like that the author attributes to various scholars and imams, their sheer number and frequency obliged me to document only those I considered most significant.
Even so, certain issues—whether texts, transmitted statements, or legal opinions—remain for which I could locate no source. I am content that I searched diligently and expended all possible effort in investigation and verification. God alone grants success.
