Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Abū Hurayrah reported that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—prohibited it; Muslim likewise records in his Ṣaḥīḥ: “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—forbade it.”

Ziyād ibn Ṣubayḥ said, “I prayed beside Ibn ʿUmar and placed my hand on my hip. When he had finished the prayer he remarked, ‘This is ṣalb in the prayer, and the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—used to forbid it.’” The ḥadīth is transmitted by Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Nasāʾī.

(1) In manuscript B the phrase reads: “may Allah be pleased with him.” (2) See Fath al-Bari, Book of Actions during the Prayer, chapter “Placing the hands on the hips during prayer,” hadith nos. 1219–1220, 3/88. (3) See Sahih Muslim, Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer, chapter “Disapproval of resting on the hips during prayer (al-ikhtisar),” hadith no. 545, 1/387. (4) Codices C, D, and Ṭ read “b. Subh,” but the reading we have adopted—found in codex Ab and in the printed edition—is more accurate. (5) He is Ziyad b. Subih al-Hanafi, said to have been either Makkan or Basran. Ishaq b. Rahuyah called him “a righteous, trustworthy man,” and the leading critics—al-Nasaʾi, Ibn Hibban, and al-ʿIjli—likewise declared him reliable. A fourth-generation tabiʿi from Medina. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 3/374, no. 681 Z; Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1/268, no. 115 Z. (6) Manuscript D reads: fa-kana (“so he was”). (7) See Musnad Ahmad 2/106 (Musnad of Ibn ʿUmar), which adds the phrase: “so he struck my hands” before “When he prayed.” (8) See Sunan Abu Dawud, Book of Prayer, chapter “On resting on the hips (takhassur) and squatting (iqʿaʾ),” hadith no. 903, 1/556. (9) See Sunan al-Nasaʾi, Book of Prayer, chapter “The prohibition of takhassur during prayer,” 2/127; his version shows minor variations in wording, and the hadith possesses a sound chain of transmission.
