Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

He went on to relate:

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “My community will remain firmly upon a portion of goodness so long as they do not delay the Maghrib Prayer until the stars are intermingling— in imitation of the Jews—nor delay the Fajr Prayer until the stars have disappeared— in imitation of the Christians—and so long as they do not leave the funerals to be handled only by the families of the deceased.”

Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr further said:

ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Iyād ibn Laqiṭ narrated to us, from his father, from Laylā

(1) Ms. B reads: “for the Jews.” (2) The printed edition has: “and whatever was not.” (3) Ms. At reads: “Christianity.” (4) The printed edition has: “and whatever was not.” (5) Ahmad records this hadith in his Musnad (4:349) under the Musnad of Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Sunabihi, with only minor differences in wording. The hadith experts deem it mursal (a Successor’s report that omits the Companion), for al-Sunabihi never heard the Prophet directly. ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Hatim notes this in his work al-Marasil (p. 121, 1st ed., 1397 H/1977), citing Yahya ibn Maʿin, Abu Zurʿah, and Abu Hatim; the rest of the leading authorities concur. (6) Ms. B reads: “ʿAbd Allah,” but the correct reading adopted here from the other manuscripts differs. (7) The printed edition has “ibn Ziyad,” which is incorrect; all the manuscripts—and Ahmad’s Musnad—read “ibn Iyad.” (8) ʿUbayd Allah ibn Iyad ibn Laqit al-Sadusi, Abu al-Sulayl, was a Kufan narrator. Ibn Hibban and Ibn Maʿin judged him trustworthy (thiqah), and Ibn al-Mubarak spoke highly of him; he was also endorsed by al-Nasaʾi, al-ʿAjli and others. Ibn Hajar classed him as “truthful” (saduq), while al-Bazzar said, “He is not strong.” Al-Bukhari, Muslim and others transmit his reports. He died in 169 AH/785 CE. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 7:4, no. 5. (9) Abu ʿUbayd Allah is Iyad ibn Laqit al-Sadusi. Ibn Maʿin, Ibn Hibban, al-Nasaʾi and Yaʿqub ibn Sufyan regarded him as trustworthy; Abu Hatim described him as “acceptable in hadith.” Al-Bukhari, Muslim and others include his narrations. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 1:386, no. 707. (10) Layla al-Sadusiyyah al-Shaybaniyyah—whose given name was Jahdama until the Prophet renamed her Layla—was the wife of the eminent Companion Bashir ibn al-Khasasiyyah. She herself is counted as a Companion by some authorities, and Ibn Hibban lists her among the trustworthy Successors. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 12:406–407, no. 2753.
