nor delay the Fajr prayer until the stars have faded away—in imitation of the Christians.
Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr said: “Abū Muʿāwiya narrated to us; al-Ṣalt ibn Bahrām narrated to us, from al-Ḥārith ibn Wahb, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ṣunābihī…”
(1) Mihaq (effacement): the verb mahaqahu means “to annul or erase”; when applied to the moon it signifies that its light has vanished. Hence “the mihaq of the stars” refers to their disappearance and the loss of their light because of the growing brightness of the sun at dawn. See al-Qamus al-Muhit, root m-q, 3/291.
(2) MS (At) reads: “al-Nasraniyyah” (Christianity).
(3) Mss. B, J, and the printed edition read: “wa-qala” (“and he said”).
(4) Saʿid ibn Mansur ibn Shuʿbah al-Khurasani al-Marwazi, Abu ʿUthman, was one of the renowned hadith scholars and preservers. Ahmad ibn Hanbal, al-Khalili, Abu Hatim, Ibn Hibban and others declared him a reliable, firmly established imam. He died in 227 AH/842 CE. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 4:89–90, no. 148.
(5) Muhammad ibn Khazim; his biography has already been given. See the Index of Names.
(6) Al-Salt ibn Bahram al-Tamimi al-Kufi narrated few hadiths but was deemed trustworthy (*thiqah*) and truthful. Abu Hatim quoted his father as saying: “He is truthful; his only fault is a leaning toward irja.” See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 4:432, no. 750.
(7) Al-Harith ibn Wahb: Ibn Hajar reports—citing al-Bukhari—that his narration from al-Sunabihi is *mursal* (lacking a Companion), a judgment also recorded by Ibn Abi Hatim (Jarh wa-Taʿdil 3:92, no. 427). See Taʿjil al-Manfaʿah, 80–81, no. 164.
(8) The printed edition reads “from ʿAbd al-Rahman,” which is correct. Tahdhib al-Tahdhib notes that anyone who says “from Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman” has erred by turning his name into a kunya. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 6:229, s.v. ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAsila, no. 465.
(9) ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn ʿAsila ibn ʿAsal al-Muradi al-Sunabihi, Abu ʿAbd Allah, was a leading tabiʿi. He accepted Islam during the Prophet’s lifetime and migrated from Yemen only to find that the Prophet had already passed away. A trustworthy transmitter of many virtues, he is listed by al-Bukhari among those who died between 70 and 80 AH. See Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 6:229–30, no. 465.
