the Maghrib prayer until the stars become intertwined.” Ibn Mājah also transmitted it on the authority of al-ʿAbbās, and Imām Aḥmad on the authority of al-Sāʾib ibn Yazīd.
A fuller wording gives the underlying reason: “They will remain in a good state so long as they do not defer the Maghrib prayer until the first star appears—out of imitation of the Jews—nor delay the Fajr prayer until…"

(3) The Companion referred to is al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim ibn Abd Manaf al-Qurashi al-Hashimi, the Prophet’s paternal uncle. He embraced Islam after being captured at the Battle of Badr—although some report that he had already accepted Islam before the Hijrah but concealed it. Even prior to openly declaring his faith, he supported the Prophet in Makka, and the Muslims drew strength from his standing. Al-Abbas remained a leader of his clan both before and after Islam; the Prophet honored him greatly, and the Companions continued to respect and consult him after the Prophet’s passing. He died in Madina in 32 AH. See Ibn al-Athir, Usd al-Ghabah, 3:109–12.
(4) See Musnad Ahmad, 3:449; also al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak, 1:190–91, who judged the hadith “sahih according to Muslim’s criteria, though the two Shaykhs did not include it.”
(5) The Companion mentioned is al-Saib ibn Yazid ibn Said ibn Thumamah ibn al-Aswad al-Kindi (some say al-Azdi). Both he and his father were Companions. The Prophet wiped his head and prayed for him, and he drank from the Prophet’s ablution water. Caliph Umar appointed him overseer of the Madina market. He died there in 95 AH and is said to have been the last Companion to die in the city. See Ibn Hajar, al-Isabah, 2:12–13, no. 3077.
