“…the Jews, for they neither pray in their sandals nor in their leather socks.”
Reported by Abū Dāwūd.
Yet the Jews’ removal of their footwear goes back to Moses—peace be upon him—because it was said to him, “So take off your sandals” (Tā Hā 20:12).
ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with him) related that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “The distinction between our fast and the fast of the People of the Book is the pre-dawn meal (suḥūr).”
Reported by Muslim in his Ṣaḥīḥ.
This shows that drawing a clear line between the two acts of worship is an intended objective of the Lawgiver, and he stated this explicitly in the narration transmitted by Abū Dāwūd from Abū Hurayrah—may Allah be pleased with him—
(1) The Jews customarily perform their prayers barefoot, without khuff (leather socks) or sandals. Therefore the Messenger of Allah sometimes prayed in his sandals—though not consistently—so that Muslims might pray in their footwear on occasion, provided the conditions of prayer are met (purity, no carpets, no harm to others) and thereby differ from the Jews as the Sunnah recommends. As for those who insist on praying in shoes under all circumstances, I know of no proof for it. God knows best.
(2) See Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Prayer, chapter “Praying in sandals,” ḥadith 652 (1/427). Al-Hakim also recorded it in al-Mustadrak, 1:260 (Book of Prayer), declaring, “Its chain is sound, though the two Shaykhs did not include it,” and al-Dhahabi concurred in his Talkhis.
(3) The printed edition reads fa-ikhlaʿ (“so remove!”), which is correct; the other manuscripts have ikhlaʿ naʿlayk, the wording of Qurʾan 20:12.
(4) MS Ṭ reads al-suhur (the pre-dawn meal).
(5) See Sahih Muslim, Book of Fasting, chapter “The merit of suhur,” ḥadith 1096 (2/771), ed. Muhammad Fuad.
(6) I.e., the worship of the Muslims as opposed to the worship of the People of the Book.
{فَاخْلَعْ نَعْلَيْكَ}
(٣)
.
