Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

He regarded the practice as reprehensible and said, “Shaving the back of the neck is a Magian custom.”

He also mentioned that Abū ʿAbd Allāh would have the nape of his neck shaved when he underwent cupping. Ahmad further stated, “There is no harm in shaving the nape at the time of cupping.”

Ibn Manṣūr reports: “I asked Ahmad about shaving the nape, and he replied, ‘I know of no ḥadīth on the subject except what is related from Ibrāhīm—that he disliked it, likening the person who does so to a dancing monkey.’”

Al-Khallāl has cited this report and others like it.

(1) In MSS B and Ṭ the text reads simply: “its dislike,” whereas the printed edition has: “from Qatadah concerning its dislike.” The latter wording is required here, for without the preposition the sentence is awkward; with “fi karahiyatihi” it reads smoothly. (2) See: ʿAbd al-Razzaq, al-Musannaf 11:453–54, report no. 20986. (3) I.e., al-Marwadhi. (4) MS D reads: fa-kana (“so he used to”). (5) I.e., Ibn Hanbal. (6) MS B and the printed edition read: “before the cupping.” (7) This point is noted in al-Mughni and al-Sharh al-Kabir 1:75. (8) The transmitter is Saʿid b. Mansur; his biographical notice appears below (p. 211). (9) MSS C and D read: qala (“he said”). (10) The narrator is probably Ibrahim al-Nakhaʿi: Ibrahim b. Yazid b. Qays b. al-Aswad al-Nakhaʿi, Abu ʿImran, the Kufan jurist. He is reliable, though he frequently transmits mursal reports. He died in 96 AH/715 CE at the age of fifty. See: Ibn Hajar, Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:46, no. 301a. (11) Variant readings: MS B has qaraʿ dayarqus; MS C, qarda barqus; MS D, dabar qus. I have not found this expression in the sources available to me, but the context indicates that it refers to shaving the nape. It is most likely a Persian term; Allah knows best. (12) That is Ahmad b. Muhammad b. Harun, Abu Bakr—one of the foremost followers of Imam Ahmad. He studied under the Imam’s pupils and sons, devoted himself to collecting Ahmad’s legal opinions, travelled widely to do so, and recorded both higher and lower isnads, eventually becoming an authority in the Hanbali school. He died in 311 AH/923 CE. See: Ibn Abi Yaʿla, Tabaqat al-Hanabila 2:12–15, no. 582.
