ʿUrwah, from his father, from al-Zubayr, who reported that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “Alter grey hair and do not imitate the Jews.”
It was likewise transmitted through ʿUrwah on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, yet al-Nasāʾī commented, “Neither of the two chains is soundly preserved.” Al-Dāraqutnī added, “The well-known report from ʿUrwah is the mursal version.”
(1) ʿUthman b. ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwam (al-Asadi al-Qurashi), the brother of Hisham, was a reliable and exacting transmitter. Al-Bukhari, Muslim and others relate from him. A noted orator and scholar, he died in 136 AH/754 CE. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 7:138, no. 287.
(2) ʿUrwa b. al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwam (al-Asadi al-Qurashi) was one of the foremost of the second-generation Successors (tabiʿun), a jurist, scholar and ascetic, trustworthy and prolific in hadith. He died in 93 AH/712 CE. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 7:180, 185, no. 351.
(3) The eminent Companion al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwam b. Khuwaylid al-Qurashi (Abu ʿUrwa), grandfather of the above-mentioned Hisham and ʿUthman, was a cousin and close disciple (hawari) of the Prophet, one of the ten promised Paradise and a member of the six-man shura council. He accepted Islam early, migrated twice, and fought in every campaign. At the Battle of the Camel (36 AH/656 CE) he withdrew after ʿAli reminded him of a prophetic warning, but Ibn Jurmuz pursued and killed him. See: al-Isaba 1:545, no. 2789.
(4) This hadith has already been discussed (p. 200); see Sunan al-Nasaʾi 8:137–138.
(5) MS Ṭ reads: “Both versions are unauthenticated,” the same wording found in Sunan al-Nasaʾi 8:138.
(6) The reference is to the hadith master ʿAli b. ʿUmar al-Baghdadi, known as al-Daraqutni (306–385 AH/918–995 CE), a Shafiʿi jurist and author of the Sunan and al-Mukhtalif wa-l-Muʾtalif. See: Wafayat al-Aʿyan 3:297–298, no. 434; al-Lubab fi Tahdhib al-Ansab 1:483.
(7) A mursal hadith is one whose chain omits the Companion. Ibn Taymiyya defines it: “A mursal report is that which is narrated by someone other than a Companion, and he may have taken it from another.” See: Majmuʿ al-Fatawa 18:38; Tadrib al-Rawi 1:195-196.
