“O Abū Hāshim, apply dye even if only once; I would like you to dye your hair, and do not resemble the Jews.”
This very wording, which Aḥmad cited as evidence, was narrated by al-Tirmidhī from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “Alter grey hair and do not imitate the Jews.”
Al-Tirmidhī remarked, “A ḥadīth that is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.”
Al-Nasāʾī likewise transmitted it through Muḥammad ibn Kināsah, from Hishām ibn ʿUrwah, from ʿUthmān ibn—
(1) Ziyad b. Ayyub b. Ziyad al-Baghdadi (Abu Hashim), nicknamed “Dalawayh.” Imam Ahmad used to call him “the younger Shuʿba.” A reliable ḥāfiẓ from the tenth generation, he died in 252 AH/866 CE at the age of eighty-six. Al-Bukhari and others narrated from him. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:265, no. 88.

(7) Hisham b. Urwah b. al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam (al-Asadi al-Qurashi): a trustworthy, precise jurist who sometimes practiced tadlis. All six canonical collectors narrated from him. He died in 146 AH/763 CE at the age of eighty-seven. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 2:319, no. 92.

وهذا اللفظ الذي احتج به أحمد قد رواه الترمذي عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال:
قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:
«غيروا الشيب، ولا تشبهوا باليهود.»

(١) هو: زياد بن أيوب بن زياد البغدادي، أبو هاشم، الملقب بـ (دلويه) ، وكان أحمد يلقبه بشعبة الصغير، وهو ثقة حافظ، من الطبقة العاشرة، توفي سنة (٢٥٢ هـ) وعمره (٨٦) سنة. أخرج له البخاري وغيره. انظر: تقريب التهذيب (١ / ٢٦٥) ، (ت ٨٨) .
