(1) In MS T: li-sabgh (“for dyeing”). (2) Hanbal b. Ishaq b. Hanbal al-Shaybani (Abu Ali), the cousin of Imam Ahmad b. Hanbal and one of his pupils who transmitted many of Ahmad’s legal opinions. Al-Daraqutni judged him reliable (saduq). He died in 273 AH/886 CE at Wasit. See: Tabaqat al-Hanabila 1:143–45, no. 188. (3) Al-Tirmidhi narrated, from Abu Hurayra, the wording: “Change grey hair and do not resemble the Jews,” and graded the hadith hasan sahih. He added: “It is also narrated on the authority of al-Zubayr, Ibn Abbas, Jabir, Abu Dharr, Anas, Abu Rimtha, al-Jahdama, Abu al-Tufayl, Jabir b. Samura, Abu Juhaifa and Ibn Umar” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Book of Dress, chapter on dyeing, no. 1752, 4/232). Ahmad recorded it in his Musnad 1/165 from al-Zubayr b. al-Awwam, and 2/261, 499 from Abu Hurayra with the additional phrase “and do not resemble the Christians,” as well as 3/356 with minor wording differences. It was likewise transmitted by al-Nasa’i in Kitab al-Zina 8/138 and by al-Baghawi in Sharh al-Sunnah, Book of Dress, chapter on dyeing, no. 3175, 12/89, with the wording: “Change grey hair and do not resemble the Jews and Christians.” (4) Ishaq b. Ibrahim b. Hani al-Naysaburi (Abu Ya‘qub), born 218 AH/833 CE, served Imam Ahmad from the age of nine. Renowned for his piety, he relayed many valuable legal questions from Ahmad, some of which are now in print and cited in this note. He died in 275 AH/888 CE. See: Tabaqat al-Hanabila 1:108–9, no. 121. (5) A passage has dropped out of the text; in Ishaq b. Ibrahim’s Masa’il of Imam Ahmad it reads: “I heard Abu Abd Allah say to Abu Hashim: O Abu Hashim …,” etc. (2/148). Abu Ishaq—i.e., Ibrahim b. Hani—is known by the kunyah Abu Ishaq and is therefore distinct from Abu Hashim. See: Tabaqat al-Hanabila 1:97, no. 105. Abu Hashim is likewise well known, namely Ziyad b.
