Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

—from the Lawgiver; for when a prescribed act is conveyed by a word derived from a meaning broader than that specific act, the very source-meaning from which the derivative is taken must itself be sought—especially when it is clear that this root meaning accords with divine wisdom. Thus, if one says to a guest, “Honor him,” intending “Feed him,” or to an elderly man, “Show him reverence,” meaning “Lower your voice before him,” and the like, the underlying concept is implicitly commanded.

Reasons for the command to differ from the unbelievers

This obligation rests on several grounds:

  1. When the command is attached to a past participle formed from a given meaning, that underlying meaning becomes the rationale for the ruling, as in the Almighty’s words: “Then kill the polytheists” (Qur’an 9:5).
(1) In the printed edition: “for the Lawgiver (li-l-shariʿ).” (2) In manuscript T: “when it is used to express a term (idha ʿubbira bihi ʿan lafz).” (3) The particle an is omitted in manuscript A. (4) Manuscripts J and D read: “or the shaykh,” whereas the printed edition has: “and for the shaykh.” (5) Manuscript B reads: “or something of that sort,” while the printed edition has: “or the like of it.” (6) I have marked this point and the ones that follow in this classification with an asterisk * to keep them distinct, since the categories overlap. Under this heading the author will mention five considerations: 1. When a command is linked to a passive participle derived from a meaning, that meaning is the effective cause of the ruling. 2. All verbs are derived forms (as the author explains). 3. Replacing the specific verb with a broader term must serve a purposeful benefit. 4. Knowledge of the general implies knowledge of the particular, and the same applies to intent. 5. The ruling is attached to the attribute by the particle fa, which in several ways indicates that the attribute is its legal cause. (7) The printed edition reads: “that meaning.” (8) All the manuscripts have uqtulu (kill), whereas the Qurʾanic text reads fa-uqtulu (then kill). I have therefore kept the latter, as in the printed edition; the same applies to the phrase fa-aslihu (then reconcile). (9) Qurʾan, Surah al-Tawbah, part of verse 5.
