“Indeed, those who believe, emigrate, and strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah, and those who give them shelter and support—it is they who are allies of one another” (Qur’an 8:72), up to His words, “Whereas the unbelievers are allies of one another” (Qur’an 8:73), and further to His statement, “Those who believe later on, emigrate, and strive alongside you—they are of you” (Qur’an 8:75).
Thus, the Most High bound the pact of loyalty between the Emigrants (Muhājirūn) and the Helpers (Anṣār), and between everyone who thereafter believes, emigrates, and strives until the Day of Resurrection.
An Emigrant is anyone who abandons what Allah has forbidden, and jihad will endure until the Day of Resurrection.
(1) In manuscript A the phrase reads fi sabil Allah (for the sake of Allah), which is a copyist’s error.
(2) Manuscript A omits the words fi sabil Allah; apparently the scribe inserted them earlier and left them out here—again a transcription mistake.
(3) Qur’an, Surah al-Anfal, verses 72–75. The printed edition adds the word “verses.” From this point until the phrase “until the Day of Resurrection” (about a line and a half) is missing in manuscript A. The printed text reads: “fa ʿaqada Allah” (“so Allah bound”).
(4) Both manuscript A and the printed edition read min baʿdihim (“after them”).
(5) Manuscript A has: wa hajaru wa jahadu (“and they emigrated and strove”).
(6) This wording occurs in the hadith recorded by al-Bukhari: “The muhajir (emigrant) is the one who abandons what Allah has forbidden…,” Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Faith, chapter “The Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe,” no. 10 (Fath al-Bari 1/53); also no. 6484, Book of Softening the Hearts, chapter “Refraining from sins” (11/316).
(7) In a hadith narrated by Abu Dawud the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Jihad will continue from the time Allah sent me until the last member of my community fights the Dajjal….” Abu Dawud, Book of Jihad, chapter “Fighting under unjust rulers,” no. 2532 (3/40). The chain contains Yazid b. Abi Nashbah, whom Ibn Hajar calls majhul (unknown) in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib. Many other hadiths affirm that jihad in the path of Allah will remain until the Day of Resurrection—for example: “This religion will never cease to stand; a group of Muslims will fight for it until the Hour is established,” Sahih Muslim, Book of Leadership, chapter 53, no. 1922 (3/1524); and Musnad Ahmad 5/92, 94, 98, 103, 104.
