Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Likewise, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—detested any imitation of the Jews and Christians in these burdens and shackles. He reproved his Companions for adopting celibate monasticism, saying, “There is no monasticism in Islam.” He commanded that one take the pre-dawn meal (suḥūr), forbade uninterrupted fasting, and he said regarding

(1) Manuscripts At and the printed edition read wa-kadhalik (“likewise”), whereas manuscript B has wa-li-dhalik (“therefore”). (2) Al-tabattul: withdrawing from worldly life in order to worship Allah exclusively; see Mukhtar al-Sihah, p. 40, root B-T-L. (3) Al-rahbaniyya (monasticism) and al-tarahhub denote intense devotion marked by seclusion from people, renunciation of worldly pleasures, and self-mortification, as practised by Christian monks who reside in hermitages, fast rigorously, shun society, and abandon preaching and jihad; see al-Qamus al-Muhit, section ra, chapter ba, 1/79. (4) This wording of the hadith appears in al-Baghawi’s Sharh al-Sunnah, 2/371. After citing “The travel of my community is jihad …,” he adds, “It is also narrated: ‘There is no monasticism in Islam,’” without giving a chain. Supporting reports are found in Musnad Ahmad, 6/226, where the Prophet, peace be upon him, says to Uthman b. Mazun, “O Uthman, monasticism was not prescribed for us….” Its transmitters are reliable. Sunan al-Darimi records, “I was not commanded to practise monasticism” (2/133). Al-Suyuti notes a mursal report, “There is no monasticism in Islam,” in Abd al-Razzaq’s Jamiʿ from Tawus and judges it weak (2/746, no. 9880). See the marginalia on Sharh al-Sunnah, 2/371. Al-Ajluni cites the saying in Kashf al-Khafa but merely quotes Ibn Hajar: “I have not found it in this wording” (2/528, no. 3154). (5) The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Take the pre-dawn meal, for there is blessing in the suhur.” Agreed upon: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Fasting, “The blessing of suhur without obligation,” Fath al-Bari, no. 1923, 4/139; Sahih Muslim, Book of Fasting, “Merit of suhur and its confirmed recommendation,” no. 1059, 2/770. (6) I.e. to fast continuously for two or more days and nights without breaking the fast. (7) Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, “forbade wisal (continuous fasting)….” Recorded in Sahih Muslim, Book of Fasting, “Prohibition of wisal,” no. 1102, 2/774, and in Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Fasting, “Wisal,” no. 1962, Fath al-Bari, 4/203. The report has many additional chains in the Sunan, Musnads, Sahihs, and other hadith collections.
