Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

He also said about the Jews:

“The revelation that has come down to you from your Lord will only increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief, and We have cast among them enmity and hatred until the Day of Resurrection.” (Al-Māʾidah 5:64)

The Exalted likewise said to His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him:

“You have no part with them whatsoever.” (Al-Anʿām 6:159)

This makes clear that he is to disavow them in every respect. Whoever follows another in some aspect of his conduct is, in that aspect, counted as part of him. When someone says, “I am of him and he is of me,” it means: “I belong to his kind and he belongs to mine,” for two distinct persons can only coincide at the level of kind or genus. Thus the Most High says, “Some of you are from others” (Āl ʿImrān 3:195), and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to ʿAlī: “You are of me and I am of you.”

Hence, when one says, “I have nothing to do with this man,” he means, “I share nothing with him; I repudiate all his affairs.” Since Allah has declared His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, absolved of everything that pertains to them, whoever truly follows the Messenger must likewise disavow them as he did, whereas anyone who aligns himself with them thereby sets himself at odds with the Messenger.

(1) Surah al-Maʾidah, verse 64. (2) In MSS J, D, and T the reading is baʿduhum ("some of them"); on this basis the intended citation is the Qurʾanic phrase baʿduhum min baʿd ("some of them are of others"), Surah al-Tawbah, part of verse 67. (3) Surah Al ʿImran, verse 195, and Surah al-Nisaʾ, verse 25. (4) This is part of a hadith transmitted by al-Tirmidhi from al-Baraʾ ibn ʿAzib in the Book of Merits, chapter 21, on the merits of ʿAli; al-Tirmidhi graded it "hasan sahih." See Sunan al-Tirmidhi 5/635, no. 3716. It is also reported by al-Bukhari in the Book of Reconciliation, chapter 6, no. 2699 (Fath al-Bari 5/303–304); in the Book of Military Expeditions, chapter on ʿUmrat al-Qadaʾ, no. 4251; and by Ahmad in the Musnad 5/204 in the Musnad of Usama ibn Zayd. (5) In MS D: “the Messenger of Allah.” (6) In MS B the blessing “peace and blessings be upon him” is not mentioned. (7) The printed edition reads: “He was absolved of them just as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, was absolved of them.”
