16
“O you who believe, do not say, ‘Rāʿinā,’ but rather say, ‘Unẓurnā,’ and listen; and for the disbelievers awaits a painful punishment.”
(Qur’an, 2:104)
Qatādah and others said, “The Jews used to use that word in mockery, so Allah disliked that the believers should speak as they did.” He also said, “The Jews would say to the Prophet ﷺ, ‘Rāʿinā—tend to us,’ deriding him thereby, and among the Jews it was an ugly expression.”
Aḥmad narrated
(1) Quran, Surah al-Baqarah (2:104).
(2) Qatadah ibn Di‘amah ibn Qatadah al-Sadusi, Abu al-Khattab, the blind scholar of Basra, was a leading figure among the Tabi‘in. Ibn Sa‘d lists him in the third Basran generation. He was an outstanding memoriser of hadith: Muhammad ibn Sirin called him one of the most retentive people, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal said he was the best memoriser in Basra. Alongside his memory he was a jurist and a specialist in tafsir. Taqrib al-Tahdhib describes him as thiqah thabt (reliable and precise). He died in 117 AH at the age of fifty-seven. Sources: Ibn Kathir, al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah, 9:313; Ibn Hajar, Taqrib al-Tahdhib, 2:123, no. 81 (qaf); Ibn Sa‘d, al-Tabaqat, 7:229.
(3) This interpretation is the one most commonly cited by the exegetes among the Companions and the early generations—such as Ibn Abbas, Abu al-Aliyah, Abu Malik, al-Rabi ibn Anas, and Atiyyah al-Awfi. See: Ibn Kathir, Tafsir, 1:148–149; Ibn Jarir, Tafsir, 1:374.
(4) MSS B and C read: fa-karihhahu (“so he disliked it”).

(7) MS C reads: fa-kanat (“so it was”).
(8) I do not know which “Ahmad” is meant; it is probably Ahmad ibn Ishaq, as Ibn Jarir indicates in his Tafsir (1:374). He is Ahmad ibn Ishaq ibn Isa al-Ahwazi al-Bazzar, whom al-Nasaʾi deemed reliable. He died in 250 AH. See: Ibn Hajar, Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, 1:14–15, no. 9.
