Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

There will always remain within this Ummah a group holding fast to the truth with which Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was sent, until the Hour is established, and it will never unite upon misguidance. Thus, forbidding that imitation increases the numbers of this victorious faction, strengthens it, and deepens its faith. We therefore ask Allah, the All-Responsive, to make us among them.

Moreover, even if we were to assume that no one at all would abandon this reprehensible resemblance, merely knowing that it is objectionable and believing it to be so is itself beneficial; for knowledge and faith concerning what Allah detests are inherently good, even if they are not translated into action. Indeed, the benefit of knowledge and faith is greater than that of sheer action unaccompanied by understanding. When a person recognizes what is right and denounces what is wrong, he is better than one whose heart is dead—who recognizes no good and condemns no evil.

Do you not see that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; and if he cannot, then with his heart—and that is the weakest of faith” (reported by Muslim).

In another wording he said:

“Beyond that, not even a mustard seed of faith remains.”

(1) The printed edition reads: baatha Allah (“Allah sent”). (2) The printed edition reads: Muhammadan (“Muhammad”). (3) The hadiths affirming that a group will adhere to the truth until the Hour are sound, firmly established, and numerous in the Sahihs, Sunan, and Musnads; the author has quoted many of them. (4) The hadith “My ummah will not agree upon misguidance” was cited earlier; see the Hadith Index. (5) In manuscript B: minhum (“of them”). The phrase “So we ask Allah, the Answerer, to make us among them” is missing from manuscript A. (6) The words bidhalika fa-inna (“for that, indeed”) are omitted in manuscript A as well. (7) Sahih Muslim, Book of Iman (Faith), chapter “Clarifying that forbidding evil is part of iman, that iman increases and decreases, and that commanding right and forbidding wrong are obligatory,” hadith no. 49, 1/69. (8) The same wording also appears in Sahih Muslim, in the same book and chapter, hadith no. 50, 1/70; the context concerns striving against those who preach what they do not practice and who do what they have not been commanded to do.
