“Appoint for us a god just as they have gods.” He answered, “You are indeed a people who act ignorantly.” (Al-Aʿrāf, 7:138)
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you.” This ḥadīth is related by Mālik, al-Nasāʾī, and al-Tirmidhī, who remarked, “It is ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (sound and authentic).”
Al-Tirmidhī’s wording is: “You will certainly ride upon the very path of those who preceded you.”
I have already mentioned the report recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim on the authority of Abū Saʿīd, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “You will indeed follow the ways of those who came before you, inch for inch and span for span, until …”
(1) Malik ibn Anas ibn Malik ibn Abi Amir al-Asbahi, Abu Abd Allah—the Medinan jurist and hadith master known as the Imam of the Abode of Emigration and one of the four canonical imams. The Maliki school is named after him. He transmitted from many of the tabiʿin, and large numbers of leading hadith scholars transmitted from him. Owing to his meticulous accuracy, al-Bukhari said: “The soundest chain is Malik from Nafiʿ from Ibn Umar.” He is counted among the seventh generation of Medinan tabiʿin. His most famous work is al-Muwatta. He died in 179 AH/795 CE at the age of eighty-five. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 2:223, no. 859; al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah 10:174.
(2) Ahmad ibn Shuʿayb ibn Ali ibn Sinan ibn Nimar ibn Dinar al-Nasaʾi, Abu Abd al-Rahman—named after the town of Nasa in Khurasan—was an eminent, reliable hadith scholar, author of the Sunan of al-Nasaʾi, one of the six canonical collections accepted by the Muslim community. Renowned for learning, piety, and integrity, he died in 303 AH/915 CE at the age of eighty-five. See: al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah 11:123–24; Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:16, no. 57.
(3) Sunan al-Tirmidhi 4:475.
(4) This hadith is reported by Ahmad in the Musnad 5:218 under the Musnad of Abu Waqid al-Laythi, and by al-Tirmidhi in the Book of Trials, “Chapter: You will certainly follow the ways of those before you,” no. 2180 (4:475); al-Tirmidhi graded it sahih, as the author notes. I did not locate it in Malik’s al-Muwatta or in the Sunan al-Nasaʾi (the smaller Sunan).
