Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

and likewise Anas—may Allah be pleased with him.

This is a vast topic, and we do not wish to pursue it in detail here. Our aim is only to alert the ummah to the danger of following the ways of the nations before it, for the matter mentioned in this ḥadīth—as the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him, said—is the very root of the ruin of the children of Adam: “It was only their dispute about the divine decree.” From that dispute there arose

(1) Anas ibn Malik ibn al-Nadr ibn Dumdum ibn Zayd ibn Haram al-Ansari al-Khazraji, the Prophet’s personal attendant, took part in the Battle of Badr before reaching maturity. He served the Messenger of Allah for ten years and became one of the most prolific transmitters of hadith. The Prophet supplicated for him to have abundant wealth, many children and admission to Paradise. Abu Bakr and Umar appointed him as governor of Bahrein and later praised his service. He eventually settled in Basra, where he died in 93 AH, over one hundred years old. See Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, al-Isabah fi Tamyiz al-Sahabah 1:71 (no. 277); Ibn Kathir, al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah 9:88–92. (2) Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Book of Qadar, “Chapter on the stern prohibition of disputing about predestination,” hadith no. 2133 (4:443): “Abd Allah ibn Muawiyah al-Jumahi al-Basri narrated to us; Salih al-Murri narrated from Hashim ibn Hassan, from Muhammad ibn Sirin, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah came out to us while we were arguing about qadar. He became so angry that his face turned red, as though pomegranate seeds had burst upon his cheeks. He said, ‘Is this what you were commanded to do? Is it for this that I was sent to you? Those before you perished only when they disputed about this matter. I command you—indeed, I command you—not to dispute about it.’” Abu Isa (al-Tirmidhi) comments: “Also reported on this topic from Umar, Aishah and Anas. This hadith is gharib; we know it only through this chain from Salih al-Murri, who transmits unusual reports that no one else corroborates.” (3) In manuscript B the note reads: lam yaqsid lahu huna (he did not intend it here). (4) The sentence becomes clear if read as: “that the root cause of the destruction of the children of Adam is only …,” i.e., by inserting the particle an.
