(1) In manuscript A an additional clause appears: “from ʿAmr b…,” but it breaks off unfinished. All the chains, however, read: ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb—from his father—from his grandfather; see Musnad Ahmad 2:196. (2) Copy B adds: “and he mentioned the hadith.” (3) The hadith is recorded in Musnad Ahmad 2:196. (4) That is, Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal. (5) Anas ibn ʿIyad al-Laythi al-Madani, Abū Ḍumrah, is placed by Ibn Saʿd in the seventh tier of the Medinan tabiʿin and described as “trustworthy and prolific.” He narrated from Rabiʿah al-Raʾy, Abū Ḥāzim and others. Abū Zurʿah judged him acceptable, and Yaḥyā ibn Maʿin deemed him reliable. See: Ibn Saʿd, al-Ṭabaqāt 5:436; al-Jarḥ wa-l-Taʿdīl 2:289. (6) Salamah ibn Dīnār al-Aʿraj al-Tammār, the Medinan judge and client of al-Aswad ibn Sufyān. Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal and others declared him trustworthy, and Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb describes him as “reliable and devout.” He died during the caliphate of al-Manṣūr.
