(1) The printed edition reads: nahaytukum ("I forbade you"), which conflicts with all the manuscripts and with the version in the Musnad. (2) The word ʿanhu ("from him") is an interpolation found in every manuscript copy; it is not present in the Musnad narration cited above. Ahmad recorded the hadith in the Musnad 2:196 and its transmitters are all trustworthy. Ibn Majah transmitted a similar report in the Introduction, chapter on Qadar, no. 85 (1:33). The author of al-Zawaʾid comments on Ibn Majah’s version: "The chain is sahih and all its narrators are reliable." (3) That is, Ahmad ibn Hanbal. (4) Copy B reads: Yunus ibn Muhammad. This refers to Yunus ibn Muhammad ibn Muslim al-Muʾaddib al-Baghdadi, from the ninth generation, judged trustworthy and reliable by Abu Zurʿah, Abu Hatim, Yahya ibn Maʿin and others. He died in 207 AH/822 CE. See: Taqrib al-tahdhib 2:386, no. 489; al-Jarh wa-l-taʿdil 9:246, no. 1023 (chapter Mim). (5) He is Hammad ibn Salamah ibn Dinar Abu Salamah, the client of Rabiʿah ibn Malik of Banu Tamim. Ibn Saʿd writes: "Hammad ibn Salamah was reliable and narrated abundantly, though he would occasionally relate a munkar report." His memory deteriorated toward the end of his life. A senior figure of the eighth generation, he was a learned, devout and prolific hadith scholar. See: Tabaqat Ibn Saʿd 7:282; Taqrib al-tahdhib 1:197, no. 542. (6) He is Humayd ibn Abi Humayd (Tarkhan) al-Tawil, Abu Ubaydah, a Basran of the fourth generation and a client of Lataha al-Talhat al-Khuzai. Critics describe him as trustworthy and prolific, yet a mudallis who sometimes practiced tadlis from Anas ibn Malik. He died in 142 AH/759 CE. See: Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat al-kubra 7:252; Ibn Hajar, Taqrib al-tahdhib 1:202, no. 589. (7) He is Matar ibn Tahman al-Warraq al-Khurasani, Abu Raja. He narrated from al-Hasan, Qatadah, Rajaʾ ibn Haywah and others, and was in turn narrated from by Shuʿbah, Hammad ibn Salamah, Hammad ibn Zayd and others. Ibn Saʿd places him in the fourth Basran generation and says: "He was weak in hadith." Yahya ibn Maʿin judged him "weak in the hadith of Ata ibn Abi Rabah," though he also remarked, "Matar al-Warraq is upright." According to Ibn Abi Hatim, Abu Zurʿah said: "Upright, though somewhat lenient." Ibn Hajar’s Taqrib states: "Truthful but prone to many mistakes." He died in 125 AH/743 CE.
