Closely related to this subject is the ḥadīth recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim from Abū al-Zinād, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Leave me so long as I leave you; for those before you were only destroyed by their excessive questioning and their disagreements with their prophets. When I forbid you something, stay away from it, and when I command you to do something, carry out of it whatever you are able.” In this ḥadīth he instructs them to refrain from matters about which they have received no command, explaining that the ruin of earlier nations was caused by their incessant questioning.
(1) The narrator is Abd Allah ibn Dhakwan al-Umawi by walaʾ (better known as Abu al-Zinad), one of the foremost scholars of the early generations. Ahmad ibn Hanbal judged him “trustworthy, the Commander of the Believers”—that is, a leading authority—in hadith, and al-Bukhari declared: “The soundest chains are: Abu al-Zinad – al-Aʿraj – Abu Hurayra.” He died in 130 AH/748 CE. See: Khalasat al-tadhhib, p. 196; al-Jarh wa-l-taʿdil, 5:49–50, no. 227.
(2) The next narrator is Abd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz al-Aʿraj, Abu Dawud, a Medinan freedman of Rabiʿa ibn al-Harith. He was a reliable, firmly grounded scholar of the third generation and died in Alexandria in 117 AH/735 CE. See: al-Jarh wa-l-taʿdil, 5:297, no. 1408; Taqrib al-tahdhib, 1:501, no. 1142.
(3) Al-Bukhari’s version reads: daʿuni ("leave me").
(4) Al-Bukhari also records: fa-innama ahlaka man kana qablakum suʾaluhum ("it was only their excessive questioning that ruined those before you").
(5) In al-Bukhari the wording is: bi-shayʾ ("with anything").
(6) Al-Bukhari transmitted the report in the Book of al-Iʿtisam, Chapter: Following the sunnah of the Messenger, hadith no. 7288 (Fath al-Bari, 13:251) with this very isnad. Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj, Chapter: The obligation of Hajj once in a lifetime, hadith no. 1337 (2:975) with a different chain; he also recorded it with the author’s chain—as well as several others, all from Abu Hurayra—in the Book of Virtues, Chapter: Showing reverence for the Prophet and avoiding unnecessary questions, hadith no. 1337 (4:1830–31), with closely similar wording, though not identical to that cited here.
(7) Copies A, J, D, and T omit the word bihi ("with it").
(8) The printed edition reads: muʿallilan dhalik ("providing the rationale for that").
