And likewise His words: “And David and Solomon, when they gave judgment concerning the field into which the sheep of certain people had strayed by night, and We were witnesses to their judgment. We caused Solomon to grasp its full meaning, while to each of them We granted wisdom and knowledge.” (Qur’an 21:78–79)
Here, Solomon is distinguished for his deeper understanding, yet both are commended for their knowledge and sound judgment.
A comparable case is the Prophet’s endorsement—on the day of the Banū Qurayẓah episode—of both groups: those who performed the ‘Asr prayer at its regular time and those who delayed it until they reached Banū Qurayẓah.
(1) Surah al-Anbiya, verses 78–79.
(2) Banu Qurayza were a Jewish clan who had settled around Medina before Islam. Allied with the Aws, they possessed farms, residences, and fortifications near the city. The Prophet, peace and blessings upon him and his family, had concluded a pact with them that they would neither fight him nor assist his enemies, yet during the Battle of the Confederates they broke the treaty and supported the pagan forces of Quraysh and Ghatafan. After God dispersed the Confederates, the angel Jibril (Gabriel) brought the command that the Prophet and his Companions proceed at once against Banu Qurayza before laying down their arms. He therefore announced: “Let no one perform the ‘Asr prayer except at Banu Qurayza.” The tribe was besieged until it accepted the arbitration of Saʽd b. Muʽadh, who ruled: “Their fighting men are to be executed and their women and children taken captive.” The Prophet confirmed, “You have judged according to God’s ruling.” For the full account, see Ibn Kathir, al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah, 3:223–243, and Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Military Expeditions, “The Prophet’s Return from al-Ahzab and His March to Banu Qurayza,” in Fath al-Bari, 7:407–416.
(3) The printed edition adds the sentence: “A herald had been proclaiming, ‘Let no one pray the ‘Asr prayer except at Banu Qurayza’,” a clause absent from the other manuscripts.
(4) This refers to the well-known hadith in which the Prophet says: “Let none of you perform the ‘Asr prayer except at Banu Qurayza.” Some Companions prayed on the way within the allotted time, while others delayed it until they reached Banu Qurayza, after the time for ‘Asr had passed; the Prophet approved both groups. Muslim’s version records the Zuhr prayer instead of ‘Asr. See: Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of the Prayer of Fear, chapter “The prayer of the pursuer and the pursued while mounted and by gesture,” in Fath al-Bari, hadith no. 946 (2:436) and partial narration no. 4119; Sahih Muslim, Book of Jihad and Expeditions, chapter “Promptness in setting out on campaign,” hadith no. 1770 (3:1391).
