or to both matters of religion and the affairs of this world, a divergence that may even escalate to the shedding of blood. At other times, the disagreement concerns worldly matters alone.

The very discord mentioned in these ḥadiths is what the Almighty forbade when He said:
“Do not be like those who split up and differed” (Āl ʿImrān 3:105),

and when He said:
“Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects—you, O Muḥammad, have nothing to do with them” (al-Anʿām 6:159),

and His words:
“This is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow the other ways” (al-Anʿām 6:153).

All of this accords with what Muslim narrated in his Ṣaḥīḥ, on the authority of ʿĀmir ibn

(1) The printed edition reads “to worldly life,” whereas all the manuscript copies have “to bloodshed,” which is the correct wording. The sense that it “may lead to bloodshed” is that it can spark turmoil and armed disputes in which people fight and blood is spilt. This actually happened with the Khawarij (Kharijites), Muʿtazila, Shiʿa, Qaramita, Nusayris, and—among modern movements—leftists, nationalists, Baathists, socialists, and the like. Such groups ignite sedition and regard bloodshed as permissible in order to impose their doctrines and desires on the community, as history clearly shows. (2) The disagreement here pertains only to worldly matters such as quarrels over money, property, and similar issues. (3) The printed edition reads: “God forbade.” (4) In the printed edition the citation continues to the words, “for them is a tremendous punishment.” (5) Qurʾan, Al ʿImran 3:105 (partial). (6) Qurʾan, Al Anʿam 6:159 (partial). (7) The printed edition adds the next phrase of the verse: “so that it causes you to diverge from His path.” (8) Qurʾan, Al Anʿam 6:153 (partial). (9) In the copies labelled (Ab, T) the wording is: “for what was narrated.” (10) Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj al-Qushayri of Nishapur (born 204/820 or 206/822, d. 261/875), the eminent hadith master and author of the famous Sahih Muslim, the second most authoritative collection after Sahih al-Bukhari. He also produced several other works on hadith and was universally acclaimed for his piety and learning.
