Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

Likewise, Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr—through Abū Salamah—from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The Jews divided into seventy-one or seventy-two sects, and the Christians did the same, whereas my community will divide into seventy-three sects.” This ḥadīth was recorded by Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and al-Tirmidhī, who declared it “ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ”—sound and authentic.
