ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ziyād ibn Anʿam al-Ifrīqī narrated—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Whatever befell the Children of Israel will surely befall my community, matching it step for step—so much so that if someone among them were to openly approach his own mother, there will be someone in my community who does the same. The Children of Israel split into seventy-two sects, and my community will split into seventy-three; all of them will be in the Fire except one.”
They asked, “Which one is it, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “That which I and my Companions are upon today.”
Reported by Abū ʿĪsā.
(1) ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Ziyad ibn Anʿam al-Maʿāfiri al-Ifriqi, Abu Khalid. He is said to have been the first child born after the advent of Islam in Ifriqiya (at Barqa) in 75 AH/694 CE. A pious man, he served as judge of Kairouan and was renowned for his boldness in speaking the truth, but the critics judged him weak in hadith transmission because of poor memory. He died in 156 AH/773 CE—some say 161/778—in Kairouan. See: Taqrib al-Tahdhib 1:480, no. 938; Ibn Abi Hatim, al-Jarh wa-l-Taʿdil 5:235, no. 1111; al-Aʿlam 3:307.
(2) ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid al-Maʿāfiri al-Habli al-Misri, Abu ʿAbd al-Rahman. A virtuous and distinguished scholar, declared trustworthy by Ibn Maʿin, Ibn Hibban, Ibn Saʿd, al-ʿIjli and others. Caliph ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz sent him to Ifriqiya to teach the people their religion, and he died there at Bab Tunis. See: Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 6:81–82; al-Lubab fi Tahdhib al-Ansab 1:197.
(3) Copies J and D read “Ibn ʿUmar,” which is a scribal error.
(4) Al-Tirmidhi and copies A and T read inna (indeed).
(5) Al-Tirmidhi has lakāna (“then he would have been”), whereas al-Mustadrak reads kāna (“he was”).
(6) The printed edition reads min (“from”), contrary to al-Tirmidhi and the other manuscripts.
(7) The word millah (religion) is missing from copy T.
(8) The word al-yawm (today) is absent from copies A and T and from the Tirmidhi edition in my possession (ed. Ibrahim ʿAtwah ʿAwad), but it occurs in al-Hakim’s narration in al-Mustadrak; this will be discussed below.
(9) The word “al-Tirmidhi” is omitted from copy B, apparently through copyist oversight.
