stating: “The Children of Israel were ruined only when their women adopted this practice”—that is, the attachment of false hair. Many of the imitative customs taken from the People of the Book in their festivals and elsewhere are likewise promoted by women. As for plunging into disputations as they once did, we have transmitted—through the report of al-Thawrī—from
(1) The particle *anna* ("that") is absent from copy B.
(2) Copies B and T read *ahlaka*, whereas some transmissions recorded by al-Bukhari and Muslim read *halakt* ("I am ruined").
(3) Sahih Muslim, Book of Dress and Ornament, chapter “The Prohibition of Hair Extensions,” hadith no. 2127 (3:1679).

Regrettably, many Muslim women today show an even greater passion for imported styles and customs, often embracing the worst of them before the better.
(5) Copies A and B read *khaduhu* ("they plunged into it").
(6) This indulgence—i.e., plunging into idle talk—is the second category; the first, mentioned on p. 125, is rejoicing in one’s allotted share (*khalaq*).
(7) The narrator here is Sufyan, as al-Tirmidhi explicitly states (5:25): Sufyan ibn Saʿid ibn Masruq al-Thawri, named after Thawr, one of his ancestors. Born in 97 AH/716 CE, he became an eminent authority in jurisprudence and hadith, universally deemed reliable—so much so that Ibn Maʿin and others called him “Commander of the Faithful in Hadith.” He died in Basra in 161 AH/778 CE. See Ibn Saʿd, al-Tabaqat al-Kubra 6:371, 374; Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya wa-l-Nihaya 10:134.
