or almost does so—save for the beast that grazes on fresh greens. That animal eats until its flanks are distended; then it faces the eye of the sun, voids soft dung, urinates, and resumes grazing. Likewise, wealth is lush and sweet, and what an excellent servant it is for a Muslim who gives from it to the needy, the orphan, and the wayfarer—as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said. Yet whoever acquires it without right is like the one who
(1) aw yulim: that is, he comes close to killing; see al-Qamus al-Muhit, 4:179.
(2) al-khadr denotes a green branch, crop, or herb. Here it refers to the withered green plants that livestock graze on, as well as an inferior kind of legume; see al-Qamus al-Muhit, section khaʾ, chapter raʾ, 2:21, and the margin of Sahih Muslim, 2:727.
(3) “Her flank swelled” means the animal has eaten its fill. Copy At reads khasirataha (“both flanks”). The khasira (flank) is the part of the abdomen next to the hip; see al-Qamus al-Muhit, 2:21.
(4) thalatat: the animal passes thin, watery dung that does not remain in the gut to bloat it and may even kill it; see Mukhtar al-Sahah, root th-l-t.
(5) In this hadith the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) gives two parables.
• The first concerns someone who greedily amasses worldly goods, enamoured of their glitter—good and bad alike—yet withholds or neglects the dues he owes; such a person may destroy his religion, his worldly life, or both. He is like livestock that rush to the lush spring pasture, relish it, and overeat until their bellies bloat and they die or almost die.
• The second depicts the moderate earner who acquires his wealth lawfully and pays its dues in charity and zakat. He resembles livestock that graze on wholesome, tender herbage without overindulging: they stop, rest, chew the cud, digest their food, and then excrete it easily, just as they had eaten it easily.
(6) Copy B reads yaʾkhudh, without the final pronoun.
(7) Copy B reads kana kalladhi (“was like the one who”).
