Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

In Sahih Muslim it is related from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “When the treasure-houses of Persia and Byzantium are opened for you, what kind of people will you become?” ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf replied, “We shall remain as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has commanded us.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then said: “No—you will compete with one another, then you will envy one another, then you will turn away from—or hate—one another, or something similar. After that, you will go on to the poor…”

(1) The printed edition reads “Ibn Umar,” whereas the correct form is “Ibn Amr,” as found in all the manuscript copies. (2) The noble Companion is Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As ibn Wail al-Sahmi al-Qurashi. He accepted Islam before his father, and—by the Prophet’s permission—recorded hadith in a personal scroll he called al-Sadiqa. Renowned among the Companions for both learning and devotion, he fought at the conquest of Syria alongside his father and, under filial pressure, took part in the Battle of Siffin, after which he would lament, “What have I to do with Siffin?” Muawiya later appointed him governor of Kufa. He died in Egypt—some say in Syria—in 65 AH. Sources: Ibn Kathir, al-Bidaya wa-l-nihaya, 8:263-64; Ibn Saad, al-Tabaqat al-kubra, 4:261-68. (3) The noble Companion is Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf ibn Abd Awf ibn Abd al-Harith ibn Zuhra al-Qurashi, one of the ten promised Paradise and one of the six members of the consultation council appointed by Umar; he renounced his own candidacy and supervised the council until Uthman was elected. Among the earliest Muslims, he made both migrations, witnessed every campaign with the Prophet, and became one of the wealthiest Companions, spending generously in Allah’s cause. Umar called him “a chief among the leaders of the Muslims.” He died in Medina in 32 AH. Source: Ibn Hajar, al-Isaba, 2:416-17, no. 5179. (4) The phrase “ʿazza wa jall” (Mighty and Majestic) is absent from the version of Muslim available to us. (5) Muslim’s text reads: “or something else? You will vie for it …” and so forth. (6) Muslim adds: “then you will hate one another, or words to that effect.” (7) Copy A and the printed edition read “to the dwellings of the muhajirun,” whereas Muslim has “among the poor of the muhajirun.”
