Iqtiḍāʾ al-Ṣirāṭ al-MustaqīmIbn Taimiya

In the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections it is reported from ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Abū ʿUbaydah ibn al-Jarrāḥ to Bahrain to collect its jizyah (tribute). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had already concluded a peace treaty with the people of Bahrain and had appointed al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḥaḍramī over them. Abū ʿUbaydah then returned with a sum of money from Bahrain, and when the Anṣār heard of his arrival they joined the dawn prayer with

(1) The eminent Companion ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf al-Ansari, an ally of Banu ʿAmir ibn Luʾay, fought at Badr alongside the Messenger of Allah. He later settled in Madinah and left no descendants. Only one hadith is transmitted from him—the report cited here—related through al-Miswar ibn Makhramah. See Usd al-Ghabah 4/124. (2) Copy B adds: radiya-Allahu ʿanhu (may Allah be pleased with him). (3) al-ʿAlaʾ ibn al-Hadrami was a Companion. His father—al-Hadrami, whose personal name was ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUbad ibn Akbar ibn Rabiʿah—was an ally of Harb ibn Umayyah; the nisbah “al-Hadrami” refers to Hadramawt. The Messenger of Allah appointed him governor of Bahrain, a post later confirmed by Abu Bakr, who also made him one of his commanders in the Ridda wars. He remained governor of Bahrain until ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab sent him to take charge of Kufah, but he died on the way. He was famed for answered prayers and miraculous feats, including crossing an expanse of sea on horseback. He died, Allah be pleased with him, in 21 AH—some say 14 AH. See al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah 7/120; Usd al-Ghabah 4/7. (4) The eminent Companion ʿAmir ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Jarrah ibn Hilal ibn Ahib al-Fihri al-Qurashi—better known as Abu ʿUbaydah—was one of the ten promised Paradise. The Messenger of Allah called him “the trustee (amin) of this ummah.” He embraced Islam early and took part in every campaign. On the day of Uhud he pulled the two mail rings from the Prophet’s face, losing two of his own incisors. He joined the second emigration to Abyssinia and later emigrated to Madinah. ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab appointed him commander of the Syrian armies in place of Khalid ibn al-Walid, where he proved a peerless leader. He died of the plague of ʿAmwas in 18 AH; his children had predeceased him, leaving no lineage. See al-Tabaqat al-Kubra 3/409–415; Usd al-Ghabah 3/84–86; al-Bidayah wa-l-Nihayah 7/94. (5) Copy B reads: bimal al-Bahrayn (“with the revenues of Bahrain”).
