Evidence from the Sunnah for the prohibition of imitating the unbelievers
In addition to the Qur’anic proof that some members of this community will resemble earlier nations in worldly conduct and matters of religion—and that such conduct is censured—the Sunnah of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) affirms the same point, and his Companions (may God be pleased with them) interpreted the verse accordingly.
Abu Hurayrah (may God be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“You will most certainly follow the ways of those before you: an arm’s length for an arm’s length, a span for a span, a cubit for a cubit—so much so that if one of them were to crawl into a lizard’s hole, you would crawl in after him.”
Abu Hurayrah then added, “Recite, if you wish: ‘Like those before you who were mightier than you in strength…’ (al-Tawba 9:69).”
The Companions asked, “O Messenger of God, do you mean the practices of Persia, Rome, and the People of the Book?”
He replied, “Who else are the people if not them?”
Ibn ʿAbbās (may God be pleased with them both), commenting on the same verse, said, “How alike tonight is to last night! These are the Children of Israel—how closely we have come to resemble them.”
